We have a few options to achieve multiroom audio in your home and we will go through them below:
HEOS by Denon: WHAT IS HEOS BY DENON?
HEOS by Denon is a Wireless Multi-Room Sound System comprising a family of great-sounding music players for your whole home. There is a free app to control them from your iOS or Android phone or tablet. You can enjoy your favourite streaming music services, internet radio or your own music collection and set-up is a breeze.
WHAT MAKES HEOS SPEAKERS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER WIRELESS SPEAKERS?
HEOS is a true multi-room system. You can play the same song in every room or any combination of rooms you choose, including a different song in every room. These are distinct advantages over other wireless systems such as Airplay and Bluetooth. HEOS uses standard home wireless technology so you can use your existing router without the need for any new equipment such as a bridging device. The wireless range and sound quality is far superior to Bluetooth and any device on your network running the free HEOS app can control every speaker. Only HEOS comes with 100 years of audio expertise from Denon.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 3 HEOS SPEAKERS?
The HEOS 3 is a dual driver design with 2 Class D amp channels ideal for small to medium-sized rooms. The HEOS 5 is a 5 driver system with 4 active drivers (dual mid-woofers, dual tweeters) powered by 4 Class D amp channels, along with a passive radiator. It is ideal for medium to large rooms. The HEOS 7 features 7 drivers including dual mid-woofers, dual tweeters and an active sub-woofer, powered by 5 Class D amp channels, along with dual passive radiators. HEOS 7 includes a headphone output. The streaming functionalities, USB and Aux inputs are identical for all models.
WHICH HEOS SPEAKER IS RIGHT FOR MY ROOM?
All HEOS speakers provide an amazing music experience. Generally, HEOS 7 is suggested for large rooms and open areas such as living rooms, patios, or open-floor-plan homes or any enthusiast who wants the deepest bass and highest output; HEOS 5 for medium to large rooms such as dining rooms, larger bedrooms and offices or smaller living rooms; and HEOS 3 for small to medium sized rooms, such as bedrooms, offices or kitchens.
WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO MAKE HEOS WORK IN MY HOME?
You'll need to download the free HEOSbyDenon app on iPhone, iPad or iPod running iOS 5 or higher or Android smartphone or tablet running Android 2.3 or higher. You will need a wireless network and internet connection and a mobile device connected to the wireless network.
WHAT MUSIC SOURCES DOES HEOS SUPPORT?
Deezer, Spotify, Pandora, TuneIn, TIDAL, NAS, SoundCloud, and Rdio with more coming soon plus music on your phone or tablet, USB storage and analogue sources.
CAN I USE TWO HEOS SPEAKERS IN A STEREO PAIR?
You can use two HEOS 1, two HEOS 3, two HEOS 5, or two HEOS 7 speakers as a stereo pair.
HOW MANY HEOS SPEAKERS CAN BE USED AT ONE TIME?
The system can support up to 32 HEOS music players on the network at once.
WHAT IS THE FREE HEOS ACCOUNT AND WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS?
Your HEOS account remembers all your settings and preferences such as all your music service logins and HEOS playlists. When you’d like to add multiple phone or tablet controllers to your system, you only need to sign in to each new device with your HEOS user name and password. Instantly all your music services and HEOS playlists are available in the new controller too. If you prefer, we support multiple HEOS accounts in a single household. This way, each family member can enjoy their own personalised e.g. Spotify account settings and still share all the same speakers in the home.
Audio Distribution Amplifiers:
Audio distribution works in principal the same way as the Heos drive allowing you to have multiple zones of audio running from a single amplifier, the benefit of this is allowing you to have more zones active at the same time from 4-128 all playing at the same time while giving you access to more sources, which is one of the drawbacks to this system. The audio distribution amps need to have sources to be used for the zones ie apple tv, chrome cast, ieast or cd players which means there are additional costs to have multiple sources playing in to multiple zones at the same time.
The bonus is that if you have a large house with many zones and are happy with playing one or two sources through then this can work out to be a cheaper solution.
Below is a diagram on how the audio dirstribution amplifiers work.
